List of some Portuguese saints organised by area.

North Zone

São Teotónio

  • Portuguese religious of the 12th century.
  • Born in Valença do Minho in 1082
  • Patron saint of the diocese of Viseu (where his relics may be admired)
  • Died in Coimbra on 18th February 1162
  • Buried in the church of Santa Cruz de Coimbra (former monastery of Santa Cruz)
  • He was canonised by Pope Francis in 2015 in the city of Colombo in Sri Lanka.

São Bartolomeu dos Mártires

  • was born in Lisbon in 1514, and at the age of 15 entered the Dominican Order
  • was Archbishop of Braga, theologian and preacher
  • he made pastoral visits to the parishes of the Archdiocese, even the most distant and inhospitable.
  • He took part in the third and last stage of the Council of Trent, where he distinguished himself by his knowledge and zeal for the renewal of the Church
  • is buried in Viana do Castelo

São Martinho de Dume

  • was born in 518
  • was a bishop of Braga and Dume considered a saint by both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.
  • dies in 579

Santa Alexandrina de Balasar

  • was born on 30 March 1904, in Balasar, a parish in the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim
  • at the age of 14 she threw herself out of a window to escape from three men who were threatening her purity
  • was a great mystic whose life motto was “Love, Suffer, Repair
  • her health deteriorated and she spent more than ten years in bed
  • had several apparitions and mystical experiences related to the Passion of Christ
  • from 27 March 1942, she lived more than thirteen years in fasting and anuria. His nourishment was exclusively the Eucharist.
  • He died on 13 October 1955, the anniversary of the last apparition of Our Lady of Fatima, exclaiming: “I am happy because I am going to Heaven”.

Rainha Santa Isabel de Portugal

  • Born in Zaragoza (Spain) in 1271
  • Queen consort of King Dinis of Portugal
  • Died in Estremoz in 1336
  • Patroness of the city of Coimbra (where you can visit the tomb in the monastery of Santa Clara – built by her order)

Santa Joana Princesa

  • Princess born in 1452, daughter of King Afonso V.
  • patron saint of Aveiro
  • was regent of the kingdom in place of his father
  • they wanted to marry her to several suitors, but she always refused and all her suitors died before the date set for the wedding, according to many it is a miracle of God, because Saint Joan Princess never intended to marry.
  • entered the Monastery of Jesus (Dominican Nuns)
  • When she died, on May 12th 1490, the town of Aveiro was dressed in mourning because the people felt they had lost their “mother”.

Santa Jacinta Marto

  • Fatima seer
  • was born in Aljustrel-Fatima on 5th March 1910
  • In 1916, she, her brother Francisco and her cousin Lucia saw an Angel three times, in spring, summer and autumn, in Loca do Cabeço and at the well of Lucia’s house, who invited them to the adoration of God.
  • From 13 May to 13 October 1917, they were visited by the Virgin Mary in the Cova da Iria.
  • Very moved by the suffering of sinners, she prays and sacrifices for their conversion, for peace in the world, and for the Holy Father.
  • at the D. Estefânia Hospital, in Lisbon, she dies alone, at 10.30 p.m. on 20th February 1920, aged 9.
  • it is possible to pray with the relics in the “Casa das Candeias

São Francisco Marto

  • Fatima seer
  • was born in Aljustrel-Fatima on 11th June 1908
  • In 1916, he, his sister and her cousin saw an Angel three times, in spring, summer and autumn, in Loca do Cabeço and at the well of Lucia’s house, who invited them to worship God.
  • From 13 May to 13 October 1917, they were visited by the Virgin Mary in the Cova da Iria.
  • Francis takes on a life of contemplation, committed to the consolation of God
  • seeks the solitude of the mountain or the company of the Jesus hidden in the tabernacle of the parish church
  • dies from the bronchopneumonic epidemic at the end of 1918

Serva de Deus Irmã Lúcia de Jesus

  • Fatima seer
  • was born in Aljustrel-Fatima on 28th March 1907
  • In 1916, Lucia and her cousins saw an Angel three times, in spring, summer and autumn, at Loca do Cabeço and at the well in Lucia’s house, who invited them to worship God.
  • From 13 May to 13 October 1917, they were visited by the Virgin Mary in the Cova da Iria.
  • was the bearer of the third secret of Fatima, which she revealed in writing to the Pope.
  • was a Carmelite from 1949 where she wrote her memoirs
  • died on 13 February 2005 and her tomb is next to those of her cousins in Fatima

Central Zone

Venerável Luiza Andaluz

  • Luiza Andaluz was born on 12 February 1877, into a noble family
  • her American mother, distant cousin of Saint Katharine Drexel
  • became a Carmelite at the age of thirty-eight, after a youthful involvement in social work
  • later founds the Servants of Our Lady of Fatima
  • the crypt where the tomb of Luiza Andaluz is located is in Santarém, near the Sanctuary of the Miracle (Eucharistic miracle)
  • dedicated her life to prayer and to education based on love and mercy

Santo António de Lisboa

  • Preacher and Doctor of the Church from the XII-XIII centuries.
  • Born in Lisbon in 1195 (the church of Santo António in Lisbon would be the house where he was born)
  • Patron saint of the city of Lisbon
  • Died in Padua (Italy) on 13 June 1231
  • He was canonised within a year of his death in 1232 (a unique case in the history of the Church)

São João de Brito

  • Portuguese Jesuit missionary and martyr, often called “The Portuguese Saint Francis Xavier“.
  • Born in Lisbon in 1647
  • Died in India in 1692
  • Canonised in 1947

São Nuno de Santa Maria

  • Born in Crato in 1360
  • He belonged to a military order and was a key figure in the Battle of Aljubarrota.
  • After the death of his wife, he became a Carmelite.
  • Died in Lisbon in 1431
  • Patron saint of the Scouts (CNE) of Portugal.

South Zone

Santa Beatriz da Silva

  • Born in Campo Maior in 1437, into a noble family
  • She founded the contemplative order of the Conceptionist Nuns in 1489 (cloistered monastery in Campo Maior – Alentejo)
  • Died in Toledo (Spain) in 1492, with a reputation for holiness

São João de Deus

Other

São Gonçalo Garcia

  • Born in Portuguese India in 1556
  • A Franciscan on mission in Japan, he was crucified and pierced by lances on a hill in Nagasaki, together with twenty-five other Christians also known for this reason as “The 26 Martyrs of Japan” (St. Paul Miki and his companions).
  • He was canonised in 1862

São José Vaz

  • Born in Goa – India in 1651
  • He was a missionary known as the Apostle of Sri Lanka, where he served from 1687 until the end of his life in 1711.
  • He was canonised by Pope Francis in 2015 in the city of Colombo in Sri Lanka.
